Welcome to Lynnwood, Washington.

Lynnwood is a city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. The population was 33,847 at the 2000 census. The city is an indefinable mix of suburban, small city, crossroads and bedroom community. Straddling the junction between Interstate 5 and the north end of I-405 in Washington, it is the final tangle of population on the north end of "greater Seattle" before one continues on to other places: Everett, Bellingham, or Canada.

Its climate is wet, wetter than Seattle itself. The heavy precipitation brings many fir trees, yet there are fewer every year as property values rise and owners of vacant lots sell them to apartment and condominium developers. The center of the town at 44th Avenue West and 196th Southwest has the usual American panoply of small businesses, strip malls, and retail stores. Outside the commercial center of Lynnwood, to the east and north, lie forests and houses.

Lynnwood was officially incorporated on April 20, 1959, from a larger unincorporated area called Alderwood Manor. The area was originally platted, developed, and sold as one-acre lots designed for raising chickens. Even today you can see many of the original 80 year old homes that were the chicken ranches.

The initial center of the incorporated city was the intersection of State Highway 99 and State Highway 524 (196th SW). When Interstate 5 was built, the exit onto 44th Avenue West became the main Lynnwood exit. At that time, the city zoned the area East of 48th W, south of 194th SW, and west of the new freeway for commercial development, and the current city center area was born, with the construction of the Fred Meyer store, a new hotel called the Landmark on 200th and 44th, and other commercial developments. This effect moved the center of Lynnwood east.

Other than the Alderwood Mall and the City Center, there are a few notable city landmarks. The Pine Cone Cafe on 188th SW and Highway 99 has been open for decades, and was historically a big draw for Lynnwood's now long gone biker culture. It is currently very popular among counter-culture teenagers and seniors, and resembles greatly Beth's Cafe in Wallingford, near Seattle. On 44th Ave. W and Highway 99 lies Keeler's Corner, an old-fashioned gas station long out of service (not to be confused with Keeler's Corner Apartments, which is across the street). The Pantry Cafe on Lincoln and Highway 99 was burned down in 2004, but before the accident its legacy was certainly considerable. Most locals are familiar with the House of Clocks, an old-fashioned clock store, on 156th and Highway 99. Notable parks in the area are Wilcox Park (formerly Flag Park) and Picnic Point Park (near Picnic Point Elementary School).

The City of Lynnwood operates and maintains 17 public parks, 110 acres of open space, an 18-hole public golf course, 7 miles of trails, a recreation center, senior center, Heritage Park, and 2 athletic complexes. Lynnwood's parks offer a wide range of active and passive recreation opportunities, including innovative playgrounds, spray pools and a skate park, as well as hiking trails, forests, streams, wetlands and wildlife habitat.

Lynnwood Municipal Golf Course is an enjoyable 18 hole course that features merchandise, rentals, and lessons. Open year round, the course puts an emphasis on fun with a combination of tight fairways and hole layout that will test the skills of any golfer.

Edmonds levy would buy schools laptops

LYNNWOOD -- Laptops, carpet and mobile computer labs in south Snohomish County schools are on the line in the May 20 election.

The new levy would help replace outdated computers and buy laptops for classroom use, said Cynthia Nelson, director of technology for the Edmonds School District. The state usually doesn't pay for computers, so most districts buy their computers with levies or grants, she said.
